Banned Book Review: Guess What?

February 7, 2006

66. Guess What? by Mem Fox

Reason:  witches boiling cauldrons, names of punk rockers, and a reference that could be interpreted as meaning ‘God is dead’.

Whoa.  Apparently I need to read this book again, because I don’t remember anything even remotely resembling ‘God Is Dead.’  *checks*  Nope.  Still don’t see it.  I see a lot of things that *might* be seen as “God is dead” if you’re big into cryptography, and a button that reads “ABBA is DEAD” that you have to look at really close to see what it says, but beyond that, nothing.  The witch in question does boil a cauldron, and her witchy robes are in fact covered with little buttons with band names, but the little girl telling the story ends it with the fact that the witch is very nice.  The illustrations ring of a surreal Norman Rockwell, and are so detailed that you’ll see something new every time you open this book.  The text, however, leaves something to be desired.  It’s very basic and simple, a weird contrast to the fabulously detailed pictures.  Text recommended for ages 3 and up.  Pictures recommended for ages 13 and up.
