Banned Book Review: Sleeping Beauty (trilogy)

January 18, 2006

53. Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by A.N. Roquelaure (Anne Rice)

Reason:  the Columbus Metropolitan Library removed the trilogy of Rice’s Sleeping Beauty books and their audio tapes after determining the books were pornographic.

I know I said that I would read all of the books in the Banned Book List, but I’m sorry, I just couldn’t force myself to read the whole of this drivel.  I was embarrassed to be seen reading it.  This is not erotica.  It is not porn.  It is not one woman’s exploration of the range of sexual kink.  It is Anne Rice indulging in her need to write about people getting spanked.  The book begins with the rape of Sleeping Beauty and goes downhill from there.  This is a Dominant/Submissive relationship gone horribly wrong.  Beauty has no choice.  She does not enter into the relationship willingly, and every act her Prince performs is written as a further rape of her mind, body, and soul.  Anne Rice chose to write this novel under a pseudonym to keep from “alienating” her “mainstream” fans.  And probably revealed them to her fan base when no one else would buy them.  The sex scenes get repetitive after the initial shock, while the descriptions and characterizations are sadly cliched.  The book is like a bad porno with delusions of grandeur, with the barest of dialogue and scenery stringing together justifications for sex scenes.  This book shouldn’t be banned because it is explicit and sexual.  It should be kept away from the public because it sucks.  The last thing the world needs is one more set of novels exploring Anne Rice’s rape fantasies.
