Banned Book Review: Cross Your Fingers, Spit in Your Hat

January 11, 2006

50. Cross Your Fingers, Spit in Your Hat by Alvin Schwartz

Reason: Challenged for containing spells.

A fun little collection of superstitions, spells, and folk myths.  A lot of standard superstitions are explored, such as why you should hang a horseshoe over your door, and the proper way to pick up a penny.  The text and pictures are often silly and occasionally written in a sing-song poetic style.  Were the text a little more academic, it would be a great reference book.  Instead, it’s a neat book to give to kids to explain why some people act the way they do.  It might be worth sitting down and discussing why swinging a cat is a bad idea, but otherwise an excellent read.  Recommended for ages 9-12.
