Banned Book Review: Deenie

January 5, 2006

46. Deenie by Judy Blume

Reason: passages that talk frankly about masturbation.

Actually, most of the passages about masturbation aren’t all that frank.  In one passage, the gym teacher explains to a class about the “special place” that Deenie refers to in other passages, but otherwise the references are all euphemistic.  Deenie is a young girl whose mother is pushing her to become a model.  But when it is discovered that Deenie has scoliosis, it seems as if Deenie’s dreams are over.  She soon discovers that wearing the brace is not the end of the world, and in fact opens her up to whole new worlds.  The characters in Deenie are well written and the exploration of scoliosis is informative without being dull.  While certainly not Blume’s best work, it’s still a great story.  Like many of the other reviewers who I read, I wish that Blume had written more about these characters.  Recommended for ages 9-12.
