Banned Book Review: The Pigman

January 3, 2006

44. The Pigman by Paul Zindel

Reason:  offensive language

The Pigman is written from the first person point of view of the two main characters, each alternating chapters.  In the beginning, the main male character establishes a system where instead of a curse word, he will use a series of symbols.  So while the book contains several instances where the characters cuss, the words themselves aren’t used anywhere in the book.  That said, this is an excellent book about teen life and the consequences of playing games with other people’s lives.  The two main characters are a pair of troubled teens who befriend a lonely old man.  The friendship and its crashing end are described in a heart breaking narrative that reveals as much about the writers as it does about the world in which they live.  Recommended for Young Adult.
