Banned Book Review: The Witches

November 22, 2005

27. The Witches by Roald Dahl

Reason: Banned for satanic themes.

OMG!  Witches!  Witches are from Satan!  Ban it!

Like many of Roald Dahl’s books, The Witches exists in a universe where the mystical and absurd are normal every day occurrences.  The main character of the book is a little boy whose grandmother teaches him all about Real Witches.  What they look like, how to spot them, and why little children should avoid them at all costs.  The little boy eventually comes across a whole room full of Real Witches and must cleverly find a way to defeat them.  At no point in time is Satan or any Satanic elements included in the book.  The one spell in the book uses bits and pieces of made up critters and a baked alarm clock.  The book drags in some places and might be a little scary to more impressionable children, but otherwise is a fun read.  Recommended for ages 7-12.
