Banned Book Review: The Stupids (series)

November 18, 2005

26. The Stupids (Series) by Harry Allard

Reason:  children shouldn’t refer to anyone as “stupid”

If this isn’t the most inane reason I have ever heard for banning a book, I don’t know what is.  The story books which make up The Stupids series are silly, off the wall, and generally wacky.  The Stupids are a family that can’t seem to get anything right.  The books are full of puns, goofy pictures, and zany adventures.  Adults will have just as much fun explaining the puns to the kids as they will reading them the books.  If you’re the type of parent who wants to discourage this sort of language from your kids, you might try talking to them about why it’s bad to call someone stupid.  Otherwise, they’ll just learn it on the street.  Recommended for ages 4-8.
