Banned Book Review: Heather Has Two Mommies

October 24, 2005

11. Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman

Reason: Homosexuality and contains a description of the process by which Heather was conceived.

Heather Has Two Mommies was written in 1990, but the style of the art is much older, lending a classic look to this book and its contents.  Heather is obsessed with the number two, because she has two arms, legs, eyes, hands, arms, and mommies.  The story explores not only Heather’s relationship with her family, but also the relationships of her friends with their families.  Much like Daddy’s Roommate, the message is a positive one.  The topic of artificial insemination might be a little off-putting to some parents, and a little confusing to the lower range of this book’s target age group.  Recommended for 4-8.  You might want to talk to your child first to determine their ability to understand artificial insemination before you read it with them.
