Banned Book Review: Bridge to Terabithia

October 20, 2005

9. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson

Reason:  Death being a part of the plot, Jess’s frequent use of the word “Lord” outside of prayer, and concerns that the book promotes secular humanism and New Age religions.

When I was in junior high, I bought this book on a whim.  It has since become one of my favorite books.  I’m pretty sure I still have a copy of this somewhere.  The story is about two neighbors who are completely different, but form a deep friendship.  Yes, one of the major characters dies.  But the story of how the other characters deal with their grief and loss is beautifully written.  The male character does use “Lord” as a cuss word, but is also reprimanded for it by his mother.  The secret kingdom created in the minds of the children is a beautiful place with all of the ideals of innocence and childhood.  Recommended for ages 9-12.
