Banned Book Review: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

October 12, 2005

3. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

Reason: This book gets challenged quite often, due to the poet’s descriptions of being raped as a young girl.

I have to say that this was an extremely difficult book to read.  Maya Angelou is a wonderful poet, but her narrative often drags.  Also, the topics she deals with are deep and emotionally painful.  It is worth the effort to get through the book, but some readers may find themselves needing to put it down for a little while so that they can have time to digest what has been written.  It is a powerful book about a young black woman’s youth and the experiences which made her a strong black woman with a powerful poetic voice.  Amazon.com recommends this book for grades 10 and up.
