Banned Book Review: Daddy’s Roommate

October 11, 2005

2. Daddy’s Roommate by Michael Willhoite

Reason: a parent complained about references to homosexuality in material for children

This is definately a book for young children.  The pictures are bright and cartoonish, the phrases are simple, and the narrator doesn’t go into a whole lot of depth in describing his father’s relationship with the “roommate.”  He talks about the things that Daddy and the Roommate do together, and the things that Daddy and the Roommate do with him.  He passes very briefly over the subject of his parent’s divorce, but the rest of the book is very positive.  There is no exploration of the negative aspects of having gay parents, and the description of what exactly a gay relationship is may be a little simplistic for older kids, but would probably work well for a very young child.  Reading level given as ages 4-8, but wouldn’t go over the head of a bright child of 2 or 3.
